Multitouch iPod nano plans revealed
It’s all but certain that this year’s iPod nano will have a clickwheel and a camera, but a newly discovered Apple patent application shows what next year might herald: a multitouch iPod nano, with the controls behind the screen. Say what?
Apple’s always trying to push the boat out when it comes to iPod controls, going with earphone only buttons or touchscreen, but this concept shown in a recent patent filing reveals yet another new control method: multitouch on the back of the device. The idea is that you would tap behind the screen in certain spots to pause, skip and play, as if there was a virtual click wheel there.
5 Apple patents we’re still missing
Now, the text entry and even number pad shown in the application would hint at an iPhone nano, but based on Apple’s reluctance to splinter the App Store, and hints of differentiating by software only, we reckon that’s unlikely. If this ever leaves Apple’s labs, we reckon it’ll be as a multitouch iPod nano that’s still a dedicated PMP. But hey, we’re willing to be proved wrong on this one.
