Why 2010 will be the year Blu-ray takes over
It’s taken its time, but 2010 will finally be the year that eyeball-stroking Blu-ray bursts into the mainstream. So what will finally tip the top notch format over the edge? Here’s our definitive guide to why Blu-ray will rock your world in 2010.
Blu-ray players breaking the £100 mark
You can already snag a Philips BDP3000 for a penny shy of £100 on Amazon. And with the Sony BDP-S360 hurtling towards the magic mark too, you can expect a busload of bargain Blu-ray decks to be hitting the shelves this year. At that kind of price, you can’t afford not to have one.
Blu-ray discs get nice and cheap
It’s all very well have a cut-price Blu-ray spinner. But the discs need to be hanging out in the bargain bucket too. Those £30 RRPs are already tumbling down below twenty quid. You can grab Terminator Salvation for just £15.98. And with Play selling the likes of Leon for just £6.95, sub-£10 classics will dominate in 2010.

More PS3s under TVs
PS3 sales are at an all-time high thanks to the PS3 Slim’s bargain price. And that means more and more houses have got access to Blu-ray and BD Live functionality. The PS3 is already one of the most acclaimed Blu-ray players out there. And if it becomes console king in 2010, it’ll help Blu-ray get even bigger.
HD going mainstream at last
Freeview HD, Freesat and BBC iPlayer HD all mean more people clamping their eyes on something which has, until now, been a niche viewing experience. And as everyone gets turned onto hi-def, you can guarantee they’ll be gagging for more. Enter a cheap Blu-ray deck and a raft of converts to the HD cause.
3D Blu-ray will wow everyone
The 3D Blu-ray standard hasn’t been finalised yet. But already the big players are plotting to tout their next-gen HD treats. AMD will use CES to show off its plans and you can expect Panasonic and Sony to do the same. Just knowing it’s out there is bound to bring Blu-ray into the limelight. And with that, a slew of new punters will be gagging to get involved.
